Reaching Out Beyond our Reach
May 21, 2008
Saturday’s Neighborhood Picnic has the potential to be a very
exciting event for our church family and broader neighborhood. Church
members have helped pass out almost 250 invitations in the streets
closest to our building, and it sounds like many families plan to
attend. If nothing else, our desire is to communicate that we are in
the neighborhood to be a blessing to our neighbors and desire to be a
safe place where they can encounter God’s love in Christ.
Another exciting opportunity that overlaps with the Neighborhood
Picnic is the opportunity to become more acquainted with the
breakdancing ministry that Josh Sazdanoff has joined. At the beginning
of May, Josh moved to Anaheim, CA to join an existing ministry, based
out of a local church, that targets the underground hip-hop culture
that might be impenetrable for many of us. Many of you know about the
breakdancing ministry that Josh pioneered here at WABC that still
continues under the leadership of Nathan Jonovich, Andy Maurer, and Zak
Tullis.
This weekend Josh and his crew will give a breakdancing
demonstration at the Neighborhood Picnic so we can get a taste of what
he is doing in California. Beyond that, he will be sharing the vision
for this ministry during the Sunday School hour (9:30 AM) and we will
have a time of prayer and sending off for him during the Sunday morning
worship service.
Rather than making a futile attempt to describe the hip-hop culture
and the strategic ways Josh and his ministry partner are targeting that
community with the gospel of Jesus Christ, I will encourage you to
attend the Sunday School class in the Fireside Room on Sunday morning
and hear the vision for yourself. Josh will also be sharing ways in
which we can partner with his gospel work.
As we consider this ministry so foreign to many of our lives, let us
rejoice in and be challenged by the spirit behind it, most powerfully
articulated by Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:22-23, “I have become all things
to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the
sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.”
